BARTOLOME

This barren island, covered only in sparse vegetation, is one of the youngest in the archipelago but also the most often visited and photographed. The various volcanic materials that make up the moon-like landscape come from separate eruptions and the different ages and compositions of the rock create formations of distinct colours, ranging from red and orange to green and glossy black. The individual solidified lava flows are a perfect illustration of the volcanic processes, which form new islands. The famous conical cliff, known as Pinnacle Rock, offers great snorkelling and visitors can observe penguins, sea lions, herons, turtles, manta rays and Galápagos sharks.
