Ecuador’s most famous attraction. Galapagos Islands , also known as Enchanted Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000km east of the Ecuadorian mainland. Galapagos Islands are quite probably some of the most spectacular islands on earth due to their unique biodiversity and endemic fauna.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 covers 133,000 kilometres and has been described as the most attractive diver destination in the world. This incredible place on earth is composed of 19 islands and more than 40 islets, with white sand beaches, dark and solid rocks, unique landscapes, deep crystal clear waters full of exotic flora and fauna. The greatest experience at the Galapagos Islands is that the animals have little fear for humans, therefore you are able to observe them from very close distance.
An astonishingly high number of species exist only here. These include giant tortoises, Darwin's finches, scalesia trees, Galapagos sharks and an enormous variety of insects. Endemic species may even exist only on one particular island.
Magnificent frigate birds, albatrosses, green sea turtles and certain sharks are among native species.
There are 23 species of land reptiles that live in the Galapagos Islands: 3 species of iguana, 7 lava lizards, 9 geckos, 3 snakes and 1 species of giant tortoise (which has evolved into 14 different subspecies).
